When a doctor prescribes a medication, we expect it to be safe and effective. Similarly, we expect that over-the-counter treatments and medical vaccinations that are designed to maintain or improve our health will do just that. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In recent years, there have been a number of high profile drug recalls, warnings about harmful vaccine components, and dangerous side effects from OTC products.
At The Carroll Law Firm, we help individuals who have been injured as a result of dangerous or defective drugs. We handle a broad range of complex pharmaceutical cases throughout Texas, including Vioxx®, Bextra®, and Celebrex® litigation. As dedicated attorneys serving Dallas, Houston, and the entire state, personal injury victims and their families can look to us for knowledgeable and experienced representation they can rely on.
Vioxx®, a popular drug used for the treatment of arthritis and acute pain, was recalled in September 2004 after it was linked to an increased incidence of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health risks. FDA analysts estimate that Vioxx® caused more than 100,000 heart attacks since its approval in 1999, and an independent study linked the drug to more than 25,000 cardiac deaths. Thousands of lawsuits have already been filed against the drug’s manufacturer, Merck & Co., which expects to defend itself against more than 15,000 claims. In Texas, the aggressive Vioxx® attorneys at The Carroll Law Firm can help victims throughout the state understand their rights and get the compensation to which they are legally entitled.
Bextra®, another drug used in the treatment of arthritis and acute pain, was recalled in April 2005. As with Vioxx®, clinical studies showed a strong link between the drug and an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health problems. Additionally, Bextra® has also been associated with the potentially fatal skin reaction Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). SJS causes a painful rash and blistering of the body’s mucous membranes, including the mouth, eyes, and genitals. SJS can also lead to severe organ damage and death. Victims throughout Texas seeking dedicated Bextra® litigation attorneys can turn to The Carroll Law Firm. We will fight to protect your rights.
Celebrex® is in the same family of drugs as Vioxx® and Bextra® and used for the same purpose. Unlike these drugs, however, Celebrex® has not yet been the subject of a drug recall. Rather, in April 2005, the FDA required the addition of its most serious warning, a black box, to the drug’s label. The purpose of the black box is to advise consumers about the increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and gastrointestinal damage associated with the use of Celebrex®. Already, the drug has been linked to 10 deaths and 11 cases of gastrointestinal bleeding. If you have experienced severe side effects after taking Celebrex®, contact our experienced attorneys serving Houston, Dallas, and all of Texas. At The Carroll Law Firm, we have the knowledge and resources to expertly manage your claim.
Introduced in 1996, Prempro is a form of hormone replacement therapy used to treat the symptoms of menopause. It has been prescribed to millions of women in the United States. However, a study on long-term use of the drug was cancelled prematurely by the National Health Institute due to the health risks that were discovered. Prempro was linked to an increased incidence of breast cancer, stroke, blood clots, and cardiovascular disease. Although the treatment is still available in a lower dose, patients are strongly cautioned about taking this drug for extended periods and should seek legal counsel if they experience negative side effects.
Rezulin®, a prescription medicine used in the treatment of Type II Diabetes, was withdrawn from the market in early 2000 after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration received reports of liver failure among patients. It was previously known that Rezulin® had a high toxicity and that the drug could potentially threaten liver function. More than 60 liver failure deaths and many more injuries have been linked to Rezulin®. To discuss your case with an experienced defective drug attorney, contact The Carroll Law Firm. Seeking knowledgeable legal counsel is the most important step you can take to protect your rights.
Since the 1930s, thimerosal has been one of the most widely used preservatives in vaccines because it effectively prevents bacterial contamination. However, thimerosal contains an organic form of mercury, which can be toxic in large doses. In recent years, several federal agencies have addressed the health concerns of the continued use of thimerosal, particularly in vaccines administered to infants and children. Several studies have suggested that there is an increased chance of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, linked to thimerosal exposure. To discuss your case with experienced defective drug lawyers, contact The Carroll Law Firm today.
Baycol®, a drug that was used by nearly 1 million patients in the United States, was prescribed to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. However, the drug’s manufacturer, Bayer Pharmaceutical Division, withdrew Baycol® from the market in 2001 due to several reported cases of rhabdomyolysis, a potentially fatal condition that can cause severe muscle and organ damage. More than 30 deaths were linked to the drug. To learn more about Baycol®, or to discuss your case, contact The Carroll Law Firm. Our compassionate, committed lawyers can help victims throughout Texas understand their rights.
In the 1990s, using a combination of the diet drugs fenfluramine and phentermine (“fen-phen”) or the drug Dexfenfluramine were popular weight loss techniques. In 1997, however, fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine were withdrawn from the market after reports of heart valve damage and other serious health concerns were linked to their use. The drug maker American Home Products agreed to a nationwide class action settlement to resolve lawsuits filed by individuals injured after using the diet drugs. If you were injured after taking any combination of these products, you should contact a knowledgeable attorney immediately as you may be entitled to compensation.
Ephedra is a common ingredient in dietary supplements, including many weight loss, body building, and energy stimulation products. However, because ephedra is a naturally occurring substance, products containing this ingredient are not required to meet FDA approval before being made available to consumers. In 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a consumer alert to warn individuals of the dangers of using products containing ephedra, and in 2004 sale of dietary products containing the ingredient was prohibited in the United States. Use of products containing ephedra has been linked to serious adverse health effects, including heart attack, stroke, respiratory ailments, hypertension, depression, and death.
